Once upon a time there was a show called My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Being the fourth incarnation of a previously established Hasbro franchise, nobody could've foreseen the massive impact on pop culture the Mane Six could've had. In no time at all, Twilight Sparkle and friends could contend with the likes of other Hasbro properties, such as the Transformers. However, despite both franchises being owned by the same company and receiving tie-in comics produced by IDW, the robots in disguise never encountered our merry mares. Not only that, but the ponies were even excluded from the IDW Hasbroverse that included the Transformers, G.I. Joe, Rom, the Micronauts, and even Jem and the freak'n Holograms. Which is total nonsense since The Misfits and Sirens would get along so well. The Dire Warth's depravity couldn't withstand the cuteness that was Fluttershy! The girls were good enough to have crossover variant covers with the Autobots and ROM, so why not be a part of this universe? As time went on, more and more people wanted to see these two beloved 80s franchises cross over. I'd say the Transformers owed it to the Ponies following Rainbow Dash's unfortunate inclusion in Age of Extinction. Yet it seemed all hope was lost...That is until 2020, a year when hope seemed in short supply in general. Despite the madness that was all of that year, we were finally given the crossover that should've happened almost a decade ago: Friendship in Disguise! Searching for allies to help her conquer Equestria, the shape-shifting, ever-shifty changeling Queen Chrysalis summons fellow morphing creatures from another world. The problem? Turns out that world is Cybertron, and both Autobots and Decepticons were brought over. Now our cast of colorful colts and vehicular heroes must unite to save Equestria from the wrath of the deceptive droids. Either that, or star on Pinkie Pie's baking show when not racing against Rainbow Dash.This is essentially my biggest problem with the crossover: despite seemingly promising an epic battle where the magic of Equestria combines with the spark of heroism to take on Megatron's fiendish forces, most of the book is spent on how the Ponies react to the robots being on their planet. Now don't get me wrong, I love MLP and have just started to get interested in Transformers, so I don't necessarily mind characters like Applejack getting the spotlight. Still, the biggest flaw any comic-book crossover can make is over emphasizing one team over the other. We get decent character moments between Arcee and Rarity, Spike and Grimlock, even Fluttershy and Soundwave of all duos, but otherwise the stakes feel surprisingly low despite a depraved monster like Megatron invading a world so cute and colorful. Still, gotta give the book props: they still give all the machines their weapons. Yes folks, there is an MLP book out there with guns in it. True they fire lasers instead of bullets, but it's still a weird sight to behold. On top of that, each story feels too short. Each issue is split into two-substories with rushed pacing. No story is given the proper amount of time to breath or flesh out what's going on, which is odd considering how most IDW crossovers go. Maybe if they had double-sized each issue or made this a 6-issue event instead of 4 it could've been on par with any of the TMNT or Transformers crossovers. I wanted a scene where Optimus and Twilight discuss the burdens of leadership, so it was disappointing that we never got to see that. Still, for what it is, it's harmless fun for fans of each franchise. Fans of Transformers may find it hard to believe that any of the villains could be easily taken out by the horses, to which I say: watch the episodes where they take on Tirek. Even then, the book itself warns you not to take any of this too seriously, as it's evident the artists and writers just wanted to have fun with the crossover that even they were eager to finally work on. While this book is certainly not more than meets the eye, it's still a quirky, fun, cute read from start to finish. Here's hoping the sequel can learn from its mistakes in order to become more than meets the eye...
