Updated for a new era, the 25th anniversary edition of this seminal work on autism and neurodiversity provides “a uniquely fascinating view” (Deborah Tannen, author of You Just Don’t Understand) of the differences in our brains. Originally published in 1995 as an unprecedented look at autism, Grandin writes from the dual perspectives of a scientist and an autistic person to give a report from “the country of autism.” Introducing a groundbreaking model which analyzes people based on their patterns of thought, Grandin “charts the differences between her life and the lives of those who think in words” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). For the new edition, Grandin has written a new afterword addressing recent developments in the study of autism, including new diagnostic criteria, advancements in genetic research, updated tips, insights into working with children and young people with autism, and more.

At this time of writing, The Audiobook Thinking in Pictures, Expanded Edition: My Life with Autism has garnered 10 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Audiobook is Good TO READ!

I am shocked at how many five and four star reviews this book has received. As a parent of a child with Autism (level I) I was told that this is a MUST read. I bought it and was excited to understand my daughter better. I have to say that it is not only poorly written, it is dangerously uninformed. Temple Grandin is not an autism expert. She is a Temple Grandin expert. Which would be great if she was writing a memoir but she includes a lot of "information" about autsim that is wholly speculative. She intersperses some scientific findings with sentences that begin "I have observed" far too often. She discusses mercury in vaccines as if it was proven to damage children's brains when, in fact, the scientific research on this topic has clearly shown absolutely no deleterious effects. I am a pediatrician and if I am going to read a book that professes to generalize about a disorder, I'd like to see references and studies and how the scientific community has interpreted those results, not a book of conjecture and assumptions. I had to give up about a third of the way through. In addition to the hypothesized based statements, I felt it was rambling and hard to follow. I don't feel that just because Temple Grandin has autism that she is an expert on the topic. She may have spoken to a lot of people that have come to see her speak but that does not constitute a scientific study.
